It's Time to Take up the Cross

Editor's Note: This is a contribution from Sr.  Christina M. Neumann. You can check out her blog here.

We’re back into the Church’s season of Ordinary Time, after over three months going through Lent and Easter.  Even in Ordinary Time, though, we don’t escape being reminded of the cross in the Mass readings.

Lately, I’ve been struggling with various hardships and have found myself hoping and praying for the day when things will get better.

Recently, though, in hearing a gospel speaking of the necessity of the cross in our Christian life, I realize that maybe I’d do well to take a different approach.  It’s not that I can’t hope and pray for improvements, for an easing up in life’s struggles.  However, in the meantime, there’s something I can do; I can embrace the cross, carrying it for love of Jesus, who carried His for me.

Now, in the coming days, as I continue with my struggles, I hope to have more of an “attitude of gratitude.”  I want to say “thank you” for the blessings I do have, especially for the gift of His help and friendship.  When I feel the cross bearing heavy upon my shoulders, I want to turn my gaze toward Jesus and offer the suffering to Him and with Him.

I know that these sufferings are not forever and that they can be an opportunity for me to grow in my love for Christ as I journey with Him toward His resurrection.
