Our 3rd Annual #InfallibyHip
Welcome one and all to the 3rd Annual #InfalliblyHip event over here at the Catholic Hipster weblog.
This is the yearly contest where we set out to crown the Supreme Pontiff of Hip, the Holy See of Cool.
In the previous two years we've had some pretty stiff competition, with two Benedicts coming out on top (15 and 12).
This year, Benedict has another chance to be the Hipster Pope, but he's got some infallible competition.
Here are this year's nominees:
John Paul I (1978 - 1978, real name: Albino Luciani)
He was John Paul before it was cool. Let's face it, being Pope for just over a month certainly makes him one of the coolest, and I'm guessing he's getting your vote.
Benedict I (575-579, real name: Benedictus)
Benedict is certainly a throw back to an earlier age, and how can you not think he's cool? He also survived the mess of an eleven month vacancy between the previous pope and him due to confusion around who was able to elect a valid pope.
John XXIII (1958 - 1963, real name: Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli)
It may be a tad unfair to put St. J The 23 on the list, he did start Vatican II after all. Will this super cool Pope with a super cool sense of humor be able to run away with the year's crown? Or, is his coolness a bit too mainstream to be considered a true Hipster?
Innocent III (1198 - 1216, Lotario dei Conti di Segni)
The longest name and the coolest hat of the bunch goes to Innocent III. Innocent was one of the most powerful and influential popes, flexing his papal muscle over the Christian states in Europe. He was influential at the Fourth Lateran Council, and did I mention the cool hat?
Time to have your say. Who is the Catholic Hipster Pope this time around?
Head on over to Twitter and let us know :)
