Welcome to a the fantastic feast of St. Juan Diego!

It's a good time to help fill your head with all the facts that you probably didn't know about him.

And I'm not just referring to the fact that his "pre-Christian name" was Cuauhtlatoatzin!

Everyone knows St. Juan Diego as the simple man who met the Blessed Virgin Mary on Mount Tepeyac back in 1531.

But here are some facts you probably haven't heard before:

  • Juan Diego was only canonized in 2002.
  • He and his wife, Maria Lucia, were among the first in the area to be baptized into the Catholic faith.
  • There is a tradition that speaks of Juan Diego and Maria Lucia living a celibate life after hearing a sermon on chastity.
  • There were two nuns in the 18th century who claimed to be descendants of Juan Diego.
  • Juan Diego lived to the age of 74.
  • The earliest known publication of the events was in 1648, with the title page seen below.

Hope you enjoyed the Juan Diego fun facts!

Now, get out there and pray a Rosary in honor of today's feast!!
