The Catholic Hipster's #StGabrielAward

This has been a long time coming.

Today, we kick off The Catholic Hipster's first ever St. Gabriel Award!

We are out to crown, once and for all, the hippest Catholic radio show, and we have taken the patron saint of communication workers as the patron of our award.

You might as well stay on the edge of your seats, because this is going to be awesome.

And, without any prolonged introduction, here are the nominees for our St. Gabriel Award:

It should come as a shock to no one that the Son Rise Morning Show tops our list of nominees. With Anna Mitchell proudly sporting her 2014 Catholic Hipster of the Year Award in addition to her Hippest Catholic Mom title, and Matt Swaim checking in as the unchallenged Susan Lucci of hipster contests, there is little doubt that Son Rise reaches the heights of Catholic cool on a daily basis.

Hippest Catholic dad nominee Patrick Madrid hosts this fantastically hip Immaculate Heart radio anchor show. It really has become the show that we have all been asking for. One part breaking news, one part NPR-style stories, and four parts Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Patrick Madrid Show is firing on all cylinders right now, and shows no signs of letting up.

None of us would even be Catholic Hipsters without the help of Catholic Answers Live. How many can say that they have been drawn closer to the faith thanks to regularly listening to this show? How many can say that they have become infinitely better equipped to explain and defend the truth thanks to regularly listening to this show? How many can say that the hilarious dialogue between Patrick Coffin and Jimmy Akin is appointment radio for them? The answer to all of these questions is obvious: millions.

I'll admit, I'm a late convert to the Catholic Guy Show, but I'm pretty darned impressed with what I've heard. The reason I find Lino's show show interesting is that it completely pulls back the veil on Catholic radio. It's just plain real, and that's what makes it so hip. He's a normal Catholic dude, and he's fantastic at making sure everyone who tunes in has a good time and feels completely comfortable talking about Jesus, and that isn't always easy to do. Great, great stuff.

You didn't think we were going to leave Jen Fulwiler off of this list, did you? The best radio show to ever be broadcast by a mother barricaded in her own bedroom has recently jumped to the forefront of the hip Catholic radio scene. She has fantastic guests, interesting topics, and hilarious recordings of her difficulties with Ikea furniture!

So, there you have the five shows vying for the hipster crown.

Which one is the hippest show on Catholic radio? Vote in the poll on the right hand side of this page (polls close on Sunday at 11:59 pm, my time), and be absolutely sure to take to Twitter to express your thoughts and opinions with the hashtag #StGabrielAward.

Game on.
